Placido "Bey" Vargas-Cortes
died peacefully at his home
Friday, Sept. 1, 2000,
after a courageous battle with cancer.
Placido "Bey" was born Oct. 1, 1926
in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and was a 46 year Ventura County resident.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1949. He obtained an ROTC commission
and bachelor of science degree
in electrical engineering,
while attending Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.
His career spanned 32 years
as an electronics engineer,
primarily at Range Development Point Mugu, and Barking Sands, Kauai,
Hawaii,
in design and development of underwater range tracking facilities.
Placido "Bey" was a lifelong learner.
After retirement, he traveled to Granada, Spain, to accomplish his goal
of obtaining a certificate for teaching English as a second language
(ESL).
He also taught himself to speak French and Italian and to play the
guitar.
Placido "Bey" is survived by
his wife of 23 years, Dotti Darbison-Vargas;
Children,
Mark Vargas,
Kim Shay,
Jill Drew (Mike),
Beth Vargas,
Bey Vargas Jr. (Carol),
Todd Vargas (Lupe),
and Mary Echeverria (Ruben);
nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; ex-wife, Barbara
Vargas;
brothers, Candido (Reya) Vargas
and Roberto Vargas;
and step-children,
Deborah Shanner,
Ken Hoffman
and Dian Hoffman.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m.
the Rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m.
and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at
10:00 a.m,
all on Tuesday. Sept. 5, 2000,
at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel,
2532 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo.
Burial will follow at
Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.
